WE HIGHLIGHT ART EDUCATION PROGRAMS, ART MAKING WORKSHOPS AND RESEARCH FOR EDUCATORS, PARENTS, AND STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE WHO HAVE OR WHO WORK WITH PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

Celebrating Faith Ringgold





A Cross Cultural One-Day Program with hands on Expressive Arts and Art Making Activities for Students and Art Educators in Elementary and Middle Schools and Museums.

A full day workshop/ series of workshops highlighting the life and work of International African American artist, writer, educator, and social activist Faith Ringgold. Ringgold is famed for her dynamic Story Quilts such as Tar Beach: Woman on a Bridge #1 (1988), Dancing at the Louvre , and The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles (1991).

A detailed look at Ringgold's art shows the influence of African, Asian, European and American art forms upon her work and illustrates the history of the United States through Ringgold's eyes and experiences. Books, posters and DVD/videos about Ringgold and her work are used to inspire students to participate in exciting art making activities that follow Ringgold's development as an artist.

The six-part program of individual and group activities include: story telling, story writing, painting, collage, performance art, mini mural making, music and drama. These activities encourage students to embrace their own creativity as well as relate Ringgold's experiences to their own. The Celebrating Faith Ringgold: Stories Through Art project will culminate in students creating a collaborative "Story Quilt" of their own that may be added to the permanent collection of the school/museum.

*Special Feature Workshop: A Patchwork of Experiences



--Learn about the inspirational life and work of Faith Ringgold, renowned African American artist, author and educator, best known for her story quilt and book: Tar Beach.

--Explore African American history, art and social commentary through Faith’s work and watch a video of her painting and talking about her life.

--Participate in a “Quilting Bee” using paints, fabrics and glue to create a collaborative painted story quilt. The quilt may be added to the permanent collection of the school/museum.

Art Workshops for Students K-8 - Highlighting Master African American Artists:Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Aaron Douglas and Horace Pippin

Peace Quilt Making Exhibit & Workshop for Schools, Colleges, Museum & Communities



Following tragic events on September 11, 2001, the InterRelations Collaborative brought together young people from communities across New York City to document their experiences on 9/11. In their own words and images, they produced a remarkable book titled What Will You Do For Peace? Impact of 9/11 on New York City Youth. Their powerful artwork and moving narrative caught the attention of visual artist, Faith Ringgold, and they were honored to publish their book and create a powerful and moving Peace Story Quilt in association with her.

QUILT PROJECT
InterRelations Collaborative and Stories Through Art come together to present a powerful combination of a Peace Exhibit and a quiltmaking workshop.

Participants produce an original Peace Quilt which permanently remains at their educational institution, museum, school or community-based organization.

This workshop may also be implemented for teachers or other professionals working with ethnically diverse student populations. See an example of a quilt completed by school teachers.
